About Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Sault Ste. Marie is a community of 15,000 people situated on the southern most shore of the historic St. Mary’s River at the eastern end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Home to the famous Soo Locks, connecting Lakes Superior and Huron, the Sault was settled in 1668. Sharing the name, Sault Ste. Marie, with our Canadian sister city, the Sault is a safe vibrant community with much of its heritage brought by the earliest French missionaries and Native American settlers. The beauty of the Lake Superior State University campus reflects the appreciation for the area’s history while bringing a vibrancy to the downtown retail area.

The Sault is proud to have outstanding health and elder care support resources. The War Memorial Hospital, a regional medical facility, is the recipient of several awards including the Gold Award by the American Heart Association.
